It’s likely that you’ve heard about the incredible anti-inflammatory benefits of consuming enough Omega 3’s in our diet. With research exposing the Standard American Diet as the driving force behind the increase of harmful diseases like diabetes and heart disease, it is no wonder that there has been a surge in demand for all types of healthy foods in the past few decades. In particular, superfoods like the flax seed have gained a surprising amount of notoriety considering they are, well, just plain old seeds!
One of the likely reasons that flax seeds and other nutritious seeds have garnered so much attention is their powerhouse of nutrients in such a small “package”. When you consume just two tablespoons of flax seeds per day, for instance, you have met your Daily Recommended Value of ALA, the short-chain component of Omega 3s! Or, if you’re like us and you like everything coated in cacao, you get some of your Omegas by eating Dark Chocolate Superseed Life Donuts!
Are you truly absorbing your Omega 3s?
However, did you know that you may be eating the proper serving of omega 3s, but are not absorbing all of it? That’s because it’s not simply the amount of Omega 3s that you are eating, but it’s also the amount your body can absorb based on many factors. Not only do you need to consider the kind of sources you’re consuming, but also how bioavailable those sources are in different forms and when combined with other foods. Being healthy can be complex, but we’re here to make your lives easier and healthier by sharing 3 lesser-known tips on making sure you are getting the most out of your Omega 3s!
1. Ground seeds are better than whole!
As small as they might be, seeds are often easier to fully digest in their ground form rather than eating them whole. Whole seeds may pass straight through your digestive system without you ever reaping their benefits. That’s why we make sure that our blend of seeds is freshly ground into our proprietary flour blend.
2. Pair your omegas with small amounts of healthy fats!
Absorption of omega 3s is most efficient when you pair it with a meal containing healthy fats. Getting the right amount of fats is required to release the right enzymes that digest omega 3 lipids in your intestine. Thankfully, when you eat Superseed Life products, you are also obtaining a small amount of healthy fats from the virgin coconut oil we use, which will help your body get the most out of the omega 3s in our flour!
3. Make sure you are getting both your short-chain and your long-chain omega 3s!
Did you know there are three different kinds of omega 3s that we need to get from our diets? These include the short-chain version called ALA found in seeds like flax seeds, but also include the long-chain versions called EPA and DHA. In order to get the most out of our omega 3s, it is recommended that we consume all three types. Both EPA and DHA can be supplemented from fish oil or can be supplemented directly from the algae that fish consume for a vegan/vegetarian option.
The health benefits of omega 3s are essential to our heart health, so it is important we know how to get the most out of this important micronutrient. If you have any other tips on getting your omega 3s, we would love to hear them in the comments below!
